Topic: Agency
Good morning brothers and sisters. My name is Derek
Detter. I am twelve years old. We have
been living in Finland for two years, and it has been a blessing for all of our
family. My topic today is on Agency. Everyone has agency. To me, I think agency
means to have your own free will, and the ability to do whatever you desire.
When Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Life, it gave them the power to know
between good and evil. In other words, it gave them agency. You use your agency
to choose what you want to do. Your
agency can be tested in different ways. Some of the people in my class do not
live by the same standards I do, the ones the church has set for us. Sometimes
they swear, cheat, and even hurt others. This is a prime example of where your
agency can be used. You can choose to participate in this behavior, or you can
choose to walk away. In D&C 58:27-28, it reads: (read scripture). The
prophets have always told us to choose the right. Sometimes you may receive
promptings from the Holy Ghost about what the right choice would be, but the
actual choice is chosen by you and only you. I learned agency through prayer
and scripture studies. Every night, I would feel very tired and would always
want to skip my personal prayer and reading my scriptures. But I chose to stave
off the tiredness and pray to my Heavenly Father. Since then, I have been much
happier. All through one simple choice to say prayer and read scriptures at
night. I know that you can make any choice, but you will not be able to change
the consequence of those choices. Your choices can also affect your life in
negative ways. I know how important it is that you must make righteous
decisions. In 2 Nephi, 27-28, it says, (Read scripture.) In The Strength of
Youth handbook, it says, “While here on Earth, you are being prove to see if
you will use your agency to show your love for God by keeping His
commandments.” I know that agency is a gift from Heavenly Father, and I also
know that we must use this gift to choose the right.
